Senate housing plans rejected

The White House yesterday said it could not support the latest Senate proposals to tackle the US housing crisis, setting back hopes of a compromise between George W. Bush and Congress.

Senate leaders, including senior Republicans, last week agreed on a bill that would deliver some government aid to struggling mortgage borrowers, as well as tax breaks to housebuilders and prospective buyers.

The White House acknowledged that the legislation was an improvement on previous proposals but said it still contained measures that raised “serious concerns”.
