Sixty percent of India’s 509.3 million labor force is employed in agriculture and related industries. Major crops include rice, wheat, oilseed, cotton, jute, tea, sugarcane and potatoes. The remaining 28% and 12% are involved in service and industry, respectively. Major industries include automobiles, cement, chemicals, consumer electronics, food processing, machinery, mining, petroleum, pharmaceuticals, steel, transportation equipment, and textiles.
In recent years, India has used its huge pool of educated, English-speaking people to become a leading outsourcing destination for multinational corporations. It is also a major exporter of software, financial, research, and technological services.
The country also boasts rich deposits of various natural resources including bauxite, chromite, coal, diamonds, iron ore, limestone, manganese, mica, natural gas, petroleum and titanium ore. All of which is being supplied to major trading partners that include the United States, the European Union, China, and the United Arab Emirates.
