One of the keys to successful investing lies in understanding various industry sectors and their cyclical nature. Like the market itself, sectors will experience periods of sustained growth, followed by periods of declining value due to a variety of factors and trends. The more you know about sectors of the economy and the circumstances that affect them, the better you can adjust your portfolio to minimize risk and maximize your profit potential.
The demand for military hardware, aircraft and high-tech security systems is such that companies, such as Raytheon, Boeing and Lockheed Martin – just to name a few – receive billions of dollars of contacts each year from both the public and private sectors. Consequently, their publicly traded shares, though sometimes expensive, are also among the strongest, offering a potentially high rate of return and substantial dividends. [more ...]

While most developed nations are less dependent on natural resources for their wealth, Canada is a notable exception. Other countries, such as Brazil, Russia, China and Australia, are becoming major sources for commodities extracted from both renewable and non-renewable resources. Demand for these commodities is high and offer some unique investment opportunities. To learn more about these emerging companies in the natural resource sector, click below.

Fortunes were made on the high-flying technology stocks of the late 1990s. But after the bubble burst, wary investors steered clear of this sector. However, tech stocks are making a comeback. Mergers, buyouts and general consolidation are creating a hardier breed of technology companies that place a greater value on actual earnings and that are gaining a larger share of the emerging global market.

The technology sector encompasses everything from computer software and hardware and consumer electronics to telecommunications and Internet services provided by a wide range of large-cap, mid-cap and small-cap companies based mostly in the United States or Asia. Predominantly found on the NASDAQ and American Stock Exchanges, these companies also trade publicly on the New York Stock Exchange and some are members of the Dow.

Aggressive investors with a high-risk tolerance are naturally drawn to the technology sector, but separating the next Apple or Google from the speculative stocks can be a challenge. To learn how to benefit from the technology sector, click below.

Talk about a rare metal – only an estimated 4.7 million tons of economically minable uranium reserves are known to exist on Earth. Although that’s enough to last for 85 years, underinvestment in the latter part of the twentieth century may produce supply problems in the years ahead.

That’s a problem because uranium is needed to fuel commercial nuclear power. Currently, 17 countries – including Canada, Australia, Kazakhstan, Russia, Namibia, Niger, the United States, Ukraine and China – produce concentrated uranium oxides. But production will have to increase dramatically if emerging nations like China are going to build the plants necessary to provide energy to their growing populations.

As a result of this demand, uranium has become one of the hottest commodities in the global economy, offering investors tremendous profit potential. To learn more about this sector and specific recommendations, click below.

Like gold, silver is considered a precious metal that is both practical and a valuable investment. Used in currency, ornaments, utensils and jewelry, silver also serves many scientific purposes since it has the highest electrical and thermal conductivity for a metal.

The price of silver has fluctuated greatly over the last 100 years, soaring to an all-time high of $49.45 per troy ounce in 1980 and falling to $4.15 an ounce by 2001. But since then, it has steadily risen to more than $15 an ounce by 2006.

The real estate sector is comprised of a wide array of developers, renovators and facilitators. The latter includes banks, mortgage companies and real estate brokers.

Despite occasional downturns in the economy, real estate is one of the best investments available. That’s because demand for housing is driven first and foremost by population growth. But factors such as income, price of housing, cost and availability of credit are also important. When the supply of housing fails to keep up with demand, prices rise – and so do the profits of publicly traded companies that cater to homeowners and tenants.

In a robust housing market, real estate stocks and call options can be lucrative investments that also pay dividends. However, even in a depressed real estate market, there is money to be made by buying put options. To learn more about this investment strategy and the real estate sector, click below.

All that glitters is not gold. Base metals, including copper, nickel, lead, zinc, coal, iron ore, aluminum, palladium, titanium and uranium, are also in great demand in both industrialized and emerging world economies.

Mining these metals is a lucrative industry, especially for companies in Brazil, Canada, China, Australia, Mexico and the United States that supply these materials for emerging nations in Asia and elsewhere. According to a 2007 report by Price Waterhouse Coopers, industry profits were 1,423% higher than they were in 2002.

Rising commodity prices and industry consolidation are fueling profits for many of these publicly traded mining companies. To learn more about the sector and specific investment opportunities, click below.

If there is one commodity that defines real wealth, it is gold. In fact, gold forms the basis for the monetary standard used by both the International Monetary Fund and the Bank for International Settlements.

Historically, the yellow metal has served as a safe haven for wealth in both good times and – especially – bad. And in recent years, gold has outperformed the Dow, NASDAQ, global stock markets, the Consumer Price Index and major currencies in terms of real purchasing power. Besides its use in jewelry, coins and bullion, gold has also proved useful in dentistry, electronics and photography.

Due to the declining value of the U.S. dollar, higher demand from Asian markets, and as a hedge against inflation, gold prices have been on the rise for the last several years and should substantially outpace global markets in the years ahead.

The gold sector includes companies that conduct exploration and mining activities, as well as those that process and sell the precious metal. Gold deposits are being mined in various countries around the world, but are most prevalent in South Africa, Canada, the United States, Australia, China, Russia and South America. Many of these companies are publicly traded and, although their shares are subject to market volatility, can offer investors substantial short-term gains.

To learn more about the gold sector and explore investment opportunities, click below.

In terms of earnings, financial services is the largest industry in the world. In fact, the industry represents 20% of the market capitalization of the S&P 500.

The sector is comprised of organizations that deal with money management, including merchant banks, credit card companies, consumer finance companies, government-sponsored enterprises, and stock brokerages.

Many of the top banking groups in the world are publicly traded, as are major credit card companies and asset management firms. And although the financial sector is vulnerable to downturns in the economy, shares of these companies often benefit from better-than-expected earnings reports and industry consolidation. Most also provide dividends to shareholders.

The energy sector is comprised of a spectrum of companies involved in the construction or provision of oil rigs, drilling equipment and other energy-related service and equipment, as well as companies engaged in the exploration, production, marketing, refining and/or transportation of oil and gas products.

In recent years, the cost of oil has steadily risen due to a number of factors:

According to the Energy Department, U.S. refineries are operating at just 89% capacity, the lowest utilization rate in about 15 years.

Auto sales are up as Chinese demand for both commercial and personal vehicles is surging.

Volatile geopolitical conditions in numerous oil-producing countries (such as Iran, Iraq, Venezuela and Nigeria) heighten the threat of supply disruptions.

As the cost of oil heads higher, so do the profits of many companies in the energy sector … which, in turn, boosts share prices. To learn how to benefit from this trend, click below.
