Talk about a rare metal – only an estimated 4.7 million tons of economically minable uranium reserves are known to exist on Earth. Although that’s enough to last for 85 years, underinvestment in the latter part of the twentieth century may produce supply problems in the years ahead.

That’s a problem because uranium is needed to fuel commercial nuclear power. Currently, 17 countries – including Canada, Australia, Kazakhstan, Russia, Namibia, Niger, the United States, Ukraine and China – produce concentrated uranium oxides. But production will have to increase dramatically if emerging nations like China are going to build the plants necessary to provide energy to their growing populations.
