Although that’s enough to last for 85 years, underinvestment in the latter part of the twentieth century may produce supply problems in the years ahead.</p>
<p>That’s a problem because uranium is needed to fuel commercial nuclear power. Currently, 17 countries – including Canada, Australia, Kazakhstan, Russia, Namibia, Niger, the United States, Ukraine and China – produce concentrated uranium oxides. But production will have to increase dramatically if emerging nations like China are going to build the plants necessary to provide energy to their growing populations.</p>
