Most of us assume that the locks on our home and business doors are keeping us totally safe against intruders. That could be a big mistake!
The lock has become a symbol of security. A false one at that.
Some 95% of all locks are vulnerable, meaning they can be breached without a whole lot of effort. And think again if you get a nice sense of security just because you have purchased an extra-expensive lockset for your front door.

Let’s look at a scenario. Let’s say a neighbor of mine, call him Joe, is doing some renovations to his home and he decides on a new front-door lock. Joe tells me how excited he is about the shiny, new dead bolt he bought to enhance his security. He has even hired a carpenter to put on heavier hinges for the door and to install his new lock.
Joe tells me how safe he feels with his new lockset.
I hate to disappoint him, but feel it’s important to address what I call the “home-security illusion.” I explain that burglars and people committed to robbing you can bypass that new lock in a matter of seconds.
I then ask Joe if he wants me to show him just how vulnerable he was to a breach of his inner sanctuary. “Sure, Jeff,” he says. “Go ahead — I can’t wait to see the look on your face when you fail.”
|Not a guarantee of full safety.|
I grab my go-bag and pull out my “surreptitious-entry kit,” and I tell him to time me. Twenty-six seconds later, I hear the audible click of the dead bolt opening and walk into his house. Joe’s face turns a bright shade of red, and he examines the lock to see if it is faulty or broken.
I put my hand on his shoulder and console him, explaining that nothing is impenetrable when someone is committed, has the experience and the right tools.
Unfortunately, lock-picking is not some highly secretive thing they only teach at black-bag schools for covert operators. Though many people assume that picking a lock is a hugely difficult endeavor, with a little patience, some simple tools and a little practice, anyone can learn.
But this isn’t about teaching you about how to pick a lock. I want you to understand that lock-picking is not some alien science that requires a lifetime of practice, and I hope that you will now have a little insight and perhaps a newer attitude toward locks and the security of your home. You need to do more to protect yourself, your family, your home and your business.
